It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (5)

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!  is a meme hosted by Jen and Kellee at Teach.Mentor.Texts.

This week’s favorite re-read was:
The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland
 - We love this cranky bear who just wants a bit of rest.  His animal friend do all they can to cheer him up but, “All he really wants is a quiet place to sleep!”  Everyone at our house has this book memorized because it’s read so often.

What I read this week:

An Edible Alphabet: 26 Reasons to Love the Farm
by Carol Watterson

Extra Yarn

Shark vs. Train

and Tom Lichtenheld (Illustrator)

Bully
by Patricia Polacco

The Humming Room
by Ellen Potter

Review coming soon

The Lions of Little Rock
by Kristen Levine
5 stars on goodreads
I would have given this book 6 stars if I could.  It knocked my socks off.  I was so invested in the characters that I was laughing, crying, scared, hopeful, and a bevy of other emotions as I read this book.  I had heard this mentioned as an early contender for Newbery and I say, “Yes. Yes. Yes.”  Review coming soon.

I also posted 3 reviews:

Cindy Moo – A retelling of the classic nursery rhyme, Hey Diddle Diddle.  Reviewed here.

Harry and the Dinosaurs at the Museum – Harry visits a Natural History Museum with his bucketful of play Dinos. Reviewed here.

How the Dinosaur Got to the Museum – An excellent non-fiction book detailing all of the steps taken before we see a dinosaur fossil on display at the museum.  Reviewed here.

This week I really need to make a trip to the library.
I've made a goal of reading at least one MG or YA book a week!

Make sure you leave me a message in the
comments and share what you are reading too.
I always love suggestions!  And, If you have a list,
I will be sure to visit to see what you've included.

  1. Great titles here! I just bought How the Dinosaur got to the Museum and am looking forward to reading it aloud over a few sessions with my class. I am with you on The Lions of Little Rock. Just convinced my local book store to order in multiple copies - they hadn't read it. It is a MUST! Just fantastic! I love historical fiction. This summer I read all of the Sara Stewart/David Small titles. Harder to find historical fiction in picture books but love The Gardener and The Friend by this duo. I am about to start the YA read Code Name Verity.

  2. A librarian recommended "The Lions of Little Rock" so I'll have to check that out eventually. Actually, all the picture books seem to be ones I should check out. Good luck on your reading goal!

  4. ooo, can't wait to read your review of The Lions of Little Rock. It's still my favorite MG title of 2012. Really enjoyed The Humming Room and Extra Yarn as well. The Very Cranky Bear looks adorable!

  5. Carrie - Yes, Lions of Little Rock was an excellent Historical Fiction read. Sometimes Middle Grade students can be resistant of that genre, but Lions has action, passion, friendship, and more. I am looking for it on award lists for 2012. I haven't read The Gardener or The Friend. I will have to look for those titles.

  7. Tara It was one of my favorite MG reads, too! I also really loved The One and Only, Ivan and Wonder. So many great reads! (We're so lucky to be readers!)

  8. Hannahlily Lions of Little Rock - I kinda can't wait to write the review either! So good. And Lots of people have been loving Extra Yarn. I thought it was cute but it didn't capture my imagination the way that it has other people. I think I might need a second read of it! (I've been known to fall in love with a book upon 2nd or 3rd readings.)

  9. I agree about Lions of Little Rock-it is so good, but there are many good ones as contenders this year. What a tough job for the judges! I like the idea of The Very Cranky Bear. People must love bears; there are so many books about them around. Anyway, this one looks great. And I really want to read the Polacco book, Bully. I'm sure it's great. Thanks for all!

  12. Linda at teacherdance I started thinking about all of the great books I've read this year. Is it me or the books keep getting better and better?

  13. I love the spread of picture books here! How nice! I have a feeling I'd fall in love with "The Very Cranky Bear" as well - I shall look for it in our libraries. I just bought a collection of Patricia Polacco's picture books during the recent Singapore Library Book Sale - but didn't come across this title - so I shall look for this one too. Extra Yarn has also been receiving a lot of love recently, so I'm definitely intrigued. :)

  14. Bully is on my TBR list (because I love all things Polacco), as is Cindy Moo after reading your review last week. "Cows" and "moons" are synonymous in my 3yo's mind.

I read Humming Room and did not love it as much as I hoped I would. Good story, but it's almost like it ended too soon. LOVED Lions of Little Rock, though. Have you read The Might Miss Malone yet? Another strong female protagonist about the same age.

  15. We love "The Very Cranky Bear," too! I feel like it's a hard one to find though. Maybe it's because I don't have school-age kids.
