It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (6)

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!  is a meme hosted by Jen and Kellee at Teach.Mentor.Texts.

This week’s favorite re-read was: The Goodnight Train by June Sobel  We love this book!  The rhyming words are a perfect rhythm to create a sense of calm and peace just before bed. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This week was a great week for reading:

I started reading  The Prairie Thief by Melissa Wiley.  So far I am enjoying the main character, Louisa.  I can’t resist the setting either.  Of course, I loved Little House on the Prairie!

This week I was so happy to get a chance to participate in the #SharpSchu Book Club on Twitter.  I loved chatting with other readers and authors.  I also celebrated Banned Books Week.  So many amazing books have been banned and kept from readers! I nearly forgot to mention that I went to a Star Wars Reads event on Saturday!  It was great to see so many MG readers who were enthusiastic about this genre!

I love starting the week by searching other people's It's Monday! What Are You Reading? lists and adding books to my own To-Be-Read list.  You will probably recognize quite a few books I've gotten as suggestions from fellow readers!  And, here are some of the best books I read this week:

The Lions of Little Rock by Kristen Levine  Set during the 1950’s civil right movement, this is the story of friendship, family, and fighting for what’s right.  Loved this one.  Check my review HERE.

Bully by Patricia Polacco An important lesson on cyber-bullying.  My review includes important bullying resources for teachers and parents.  Make sure you check the review HERE.

The Humming Room by Ellen Potter I was very fond of characters Roo and Jack in this story based on The Secret Garden.  Check my review HERE.

  2. Glad to hear that you had a great week of reading. It's always good to be able to say that. :) I've heard about Creepy Carrots - looks like a perfect book for Halloween. I lovelovelove that you have the Story of Ferdinand here - I learned about this picture book through the movie The Blindside - and when I found it in our library, it was just perfect. May I ask why it was banned? I didn't know about that. The Humming Room and The Lions of Little Rock also look mighty promising.

  3. Betsy - Prairie Thief has been good so far. I wonder if readers are still captivated by old fashioned things like prairie life? And, yes, lots for kindergarteners this week! Creep Carrots was a "not so scary" spooky read.

  4. Myra, from what I understand, Story of Ferdinand was banned in Spain by dictator Francisco Franco who detested the pacifistic tones in the book.

  5. I loved your Lions of Little Rock Review. I am planning to read this book with my student book club after Christmas. I am going to pin your review for future reference. It is one of my top 5 reads in the past year! Little Bird is one of my favourite picture books of the year as well. I love the illustrations. Had the opportunity to read it aloud to 50 plus primary students in a sitting and it was magical. I really want to get my hands on Creepy Carrots. Such great books on your list this week! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Carrie- I have found that I really enjoy great historical fiction like Lions of Little Rock. To me, it's as if the book tells a good story, teaches us something about history, and also helps us learn important life lessons. Thanks for taking time to read my review.

  7. So much great reading this week! Many are on my TBR. I love a good rhyming night time read aloud and The Goodnight Train sounds like fun one. The Little Bird and The Lions of Little Rock are two of my favorites this year. I'm hopeful that in this amazing middle grade release year that TLOLR won't be lost in the noise as the Newbery committee ponders their pick.

  9. Lorna, I adore Goodnight Train. I've given it as a gift to new parents. Not only is the rhyming sweet, I never get tired of looking at the illustrations! I've been reading it aloud for 3 years and still find new things that interest me. Little Bird was ... just magical! and we agree about Lions of Little Rock!

  10. Katya, Creepy Carrots was very cute! My 3 yr old loved the illustrations and the story. It's not quite a Halloween story, so it could be used year 'round.
